The symposium will call international attention to the plastic problem in Arctic waters, focusing on research to date, threats posed by macro and micro plastics for the ecosystems and the blue economy, and not least provide a venue for discussing the “life-cycle” of plastics, from production to innovative methods for mitigation and reduction/elimination of plastic pollution threat to the environment. The symposium’s conclusions will contribute to informing policy and underscoring the need for joint international efforts, such as the agreement currently under negotiations, to successfully clean up our ocean and protect biodiversity.
